Elle émet depuis avril 1955. TBS est un holding créé en mai 1951 pour la Radio Tokyo KRT, puis renommé en TBS.

En 1990, elle envoya le premier japonais dans l'espace en organisant un vol pour le journaliste Toyohiro Akiyama a bord de la mission Soyouz TM-11 à destination de la station spatiale Mir.
